Fun fact – this is the first crochet blanket I’ve ever made!
Making a blanket has always been intimidating to me. For one project to eat SO MUCH yarn and take SO LONG to complete has always made it SO unappealing. I have a hard enough time finishing a 2 hour project sometimes – so I highly doubted I’d be able to stay dedicated to finishing a blanket.
But then I was watching some crochet YouTube videos and heard a few crocheters refer to blanket projects as “meditative.” And boy did that sound nice. A simple, relaxing project that I could enjoy without too much effort. So I figured I would give it a shot.
But I wasn’t totally sold on the idea that I wouldn’t get bored, so I decided to make the smallest commitment possible and make a baby blanket! They’re much smaller than a full-size blanket so I shouldn’t get bored and quit, right?
So I looked into all the different baby blanket sizes and saw that there was a size specifically for car seats. And I knew that was the size for me! Nice and small, but still cute and definitely functional! (I don’t have a daughter yet, but one day I hope to, and she can enjoy this cute little car seat blanket.)
A car seat blanket is also great because your baby won’t be drowning in fabric but their little legs can still be kept nice and cozy! It’s also small enough that you can easily tuck it away the back pocket of a car seat.
And I loved making my first crochet blanket! I definitely understand why “meditative” crochet is so great now. And I’ll definitely be doing more of it in the future.
I figured since I had so much fun with this meditative crochet project that I’d share the pattern I created with you!
It’s a super simple pattern. Each row is worked exactly the same, and you only need to know how to make a double crochet stitch, a dc2tog stitch (how to double crochet two stitches together), and a chain stitch. This simple, repetitive quality is what makes it such a great meditative project.
I’ve listed what colors I used and the order I used them in below, but you can easily switch them up and make many unique blankets.
Read on for the specifics of the pattern, and happy crocheting!

Crochet Car Seat Blanket Pattern
With color A, ch 80.
Row 1: Ch 2, dc 8, dc2tog, dc2tog, dc 7 *dc 2 in next st, dc 2 in next stitch, dc 7, dc2tog, dc2tog, dc 7* 3 times, dc 2 in the final st. Don’t make a turning chain, turn
Rows 2-41: ch 2, then working in FLO, dc 8, dc2tog, dc2tog, dc 7, *dc 2 in next st, dc 2 in next st, dc 7, dc2tog, dc2tog, dc 7* 3 times, dc 2 in the final st. Don’t make a turning chain, turn.
Throughout rows 2-41 I changed colors often to create various thick and thin stripes throughout the blanket. The color pattern that I used almost completely used up each color of yarn that I had – I just barely had enough to finish the blanket! You can see all the leftover yarn I had before.
So if you’re wanting to change up the stripe pattern, just keep in mind you may need to have more than 1 ball of that color yarn on hand.
To get the same stripes as you see in the picture follow this color pattern:
Rows 1-4: Color A
Rows 5-7: Color B
Row 8: Color C
Rows 9-10: Color B
Rows 11-12: Color A
Row 13: Color B
Row 14: Color C
Rows 15-16: Color B
Row 17: Color A
Row 18: Color B
Rows 19-21: Color C
Rows 22-23: Color B
Rows 24-26: Color A
Rows 27-28: Color B
Row 29: Color C
Row 30: Color B
Rows 31-32: Color A
Rows 33-34: Color B
Row 35: Color C
Rows 36-37: Color B
Rows 38-41: Color A
As I was working my blanket I found it easier to follow this diagram I made showing how many rows were needed for each color stripe. Instead of having to count from my pattern each time I could just take a look at the diagram and match it up to what my blanket looked like!
If you’re interested in doing the same, here’s the diagram that I used:
Once you’ve finished all your stripes and reached the end of row 41, FO. Weave in all of your ends.
And your crochet car seat baby blanket is complete!
