Simple Crochet Bunny Pattern for Beginners

This super simple crochet bunny pattern is one that I created in high school. At the time I was trying to make a crochet blog and wanted to have a free pattern available to draw people to my content. But then I only made three posts and never touched it again – whoops! So I guess you could say this is my do-over!

I still love this pattern, and with only 5 pieces and 4 different stitches it really is an ideal pattern for a beginner. Or if you’re a crochet veteran and just want a quick, simple project this will be great for you too!

NOTE: If you are wanting to sell finished products from this crochet bunny pattern you’re welcome to, just make sure you link back to my pattern here and credit me with the design. Thank you!

Abbreviations

  • Sc – single crochet
  • Inc – increase
  • Dec – decrease
  • FO – Finish off
  • Rnd – round
  • sts – stitches

Materials

  • An F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
  • Red Heart Super Saver yarn in the color “Buff” (or any beige yarn)
  • A small amount of white yarn
  • A tapestry/yarn needle
  • 12mm safety eyes (or alternatively black yarn to stitch eyes on)
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing (I use polyester fiberfill)

Head

Start with beige yarn

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic circle (6)

Rnd 2: *inc* 6 times (12)

Rnd 3: *sc, inc* 6 times (18)

Rnd 4: *sc (2), inc* 6 times (24)

Rnd 5: *sc (3), inc* 6 times (30)

Rnds 6-10: In each round sc 30 times

Rnd 11: *sc (3), dec* 6 times (24)

Rnd 12: *sc (2), dec* 6 times (18)

If you’re using safety eyes, attach them now between rows 8 and 9, with 5-6 stitches in between where the pegs will go through your crocheted head.

Rnd 13: *sc (1), dec* 6 times (12)

Start to stuff the head as much as you can.

Rnd 14: *dec* 6 times (6)

Finish stuffing the head, placing enough inside so that the head is firm but still squishy. You should now have six or seven stitches left, simply thread through them and pull shut. Weave the thread back into the head. (Or, if you’re lazy like me, just stuff the thread back inside the head, it’ll get covered by the body anyways.)

If you chose to use yarn to stitch on the eyes do so now, that way it’s easier to secure the string and hide the ends inside the head.

Body

Start with beige yarn

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic circle (6)

Rnd 2: *inc* 6 times (12)

Rnd 3: *sc (2), inc (2), sc (2)* twice (16)

Rnds 4-5: In each round sc 16 times

Rnd 6:  *sc (2), dec (2), sc (2)* twice (12)

FO, leaving a tail about 7 inches long for sewing the body to the head later. Fill the body with enough stuffing so that it is firm but still squishy.

Ears (make 2)

Start with beige yarn

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic circle (6)

Rnd 2: *sc, inc* 3 times (9)

Rnds 3-4: In each round sc 9 times

Rnd 5: *sc, dec* 3 times (6)

Rnds 6-7: In each round sc 6 times

FO, leaving about a 7 inch tail to sew the ears onto the head later.

Tail

Start with white yarn

Rnd 1: 5 sc in a magic circle (5)

Rnd 2: sc 5

FO, leaving about a 6 inch tail to sew the tail onto the body later.

Assembly

First sew the head onto the body using the tail from the body piece that you crocheted.

Then sew the ears onto the head towards the back of the top of the head using the tails of yarn on each ear.

Finally, sew the little button tail onto the back of the bunny’s body. You’ll want to sew it onto round 4 of the body in the center of the back of the bunny.

And you’re all done!
